TRYCITIES stands for transformative youth cities.
It is a program that brings together diverse
youth communities, civil society, art and science,
to propose collaborative pathways to face
social challenges, incubate youth-led sustainable
projects, promote new public spaces, and develop
an urban innovation network.
Youth-led urban change
We live in times of widespread recognition that the future of our urban societies faces the need for inclusive and sustainable alternatives for transformation.
Inspired by TRYSPACES' 5-year participatory research about marginalized youth in urban ecosystems, TRYCITIES envisions youth voices at the forefront of the cultural, social, economic, and political transformations of our cities. At the forefront of hope for change for our urban societies.
Driven by youthful creative energy and enthusiastic vision, TRYCITIES tries to find seeds of urban innovation within the social challenges of local realities.  It will push youth voices to the forefront of sustainable innovation while bringing science closer to real-life preoccupations.

TRYCITIES proposes to pilot a new inclusive and integrated approach that brings together diverse youth groups in a trans-local way of sustainable city making, by two interconnected processes: incubating urban innovations through collaborative Research & Creation, and ​using those R&C outputs to develop a pan-Canadian urban innovation network.

From 2021 to 2023, local youth cohorts are engaging in a Research & Creation program: beginning with the ideation of sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by marginalized youth communities and ending with the incubation of urban innovation and advocacy projects.

This Research & Creation collaborative process brings together 4 youth cohorts, researchers, artists, community organizations, and urban professionals in Montreal, Hanoi, Mexico, and Paris, into a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Collaborating with their peers and building on 5 years of TRYSPACES participatory research and community engagement, youth cohorts will engage with marginalized urban youth communities to face challenges and develop for-youth-by-youth inclusive sustainable solutions and advocacy projects.

Young people involved in TRYCITIES will learn different skills by being actively involved in experimentation. Including: knowledge mobilization, applying research to creative industry, project management, team collaboration and leadership skills.

TRYCITIES will foster the connections, alliances and exchange opportunities of the broader TRYSPACES social science research project.

TRYCITIES is a descentralized, multi-city global project, headquartered on Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal) —the traditional territory of the Kanien'kehá:ka Nation, and a place of meeting and exchange for many nations since time immemorial.
